Why does my connection keep dropping out?
Dial Up connections can terminate for a number of reasons. Following are some of the more common causes:
Call Waiting
If call waiting is enabled on your line, a 'beep' tone will sound when you have an incoming call. Unfortunately this tone can cause problems with your internet connection. You could disable call waiting while you are online and that will solve this problem. To do this, insert *44,, in your Dial Up connection before Clear Networks' Dial Up number.
Line noise
Noise on your phone line is a likely cause of Dial Up disconnections. If you hear static, ticking, whistling, crackling or any other interference while you are making a telephone call, it will affect your internet connection. Contact your telephone provider requesting a line test and possibly repairs.
Wires and/or cables
Damaged or old cables can cause problems with Dial Up connections. If the cables you are using do not appear to be in good condition, it is recommended that they be replaced. Also use the shortest cable possible, as cable length also decreases the quality of the connection.
Older telephone equipment
Some older telephones can draw larger amounts of power from the line which may cause your internet to disconnect. To find out if this is the cause of your disconnections, disconnect your telephone handset from the line when you are connected. If the problem disappears, then it is likely that your telephones are causing your disconnections. You may like to purchase a new handset or, if you are renting the handset, you can contact your phone provider to have it replaced.
The internal telephone wiring in your house may also be damaged. This problem is more common in older houses, where the wires may have degraded. You should discuss this with a telephone technician. Please do not attempt to repair or modify internal wiring.
