How do the signals get to me? Clear Network’s Wireless Broadband Internet is broadcast just like radio and TV, except that it’s two-way. The small wireless device that Clear Networks contractors will install at your home or office allows you to send and receive information over the Internet. Will the wireless signals travels through trees and bushes? Yes. As most of our customers are located in rural areas, Clear Networks has chosen a radio frequency that’s ideal for penetrating light foliage. The signals do have to be within line of sight of our ClearTown tower; hills, mountains or large trees may affect the signals. Will the wireless service work in bad weather conditions? Yes, the Clear Networks wireless network is unaffected by bad weather, baring “extreme” weather conditions such as gale force winds or hail. Can I connect more than one computer to the service? Yes, you can connect as many computers as you like in your home or office; however you’ll need a Broadband Router with sufficient ports to share the connection. You can also use home wireless networks to share your Clear Networks connection, however we recommend you get professional advice regarding home wireless network security. If the service fails, how long will it take before it will be online? The Clear Networks service is very reliable. Our service level agreement is a maximum of 24 hours to respond to any customer faults; however our average repair time is much shorter. If a base station fails, affecting multiple subscribers, the repair time may vary depending on the type of failure and availability of hardware. How secure is the wireless network? While home wireless networks have a reputation for poor security, Clear Networks uses a carrier-grade wireless network that can’t be “hacked”. For the technically minded, our equipment uses carrier frequency hopping (50ms hops) which provides good security. In addition, we use data encryption plus a proprietary air protocol and proprietary framing, authentication and fragmentation. Does the wireless modem have a built in firewall? The Clear Networks wireless network is very secure; however we recommend you install your own software firewall on each PC, particularly if you are setting up a home wireless network to share the service. The Broadband Routers that Clear Networks recommends come with a built-in firewall as standard. Is it safe? Yes, very safe. Clear Network’s equipment operates at a very low power range, typically a fraction of the power of a mobile phone tower, and as the equipment is mounted on your roof, it’s not even close to you. How can I tell when I am close to my monthly download allowance? You can go to the Clear Networks Web site, log in and see exactly how much of your data allowance you have used to date on our usage meter. We recommend you check your data usage regularly even if you have a good idea of how much data you usually use. As part of the Clear Networks service we will send you a warning email when you reach 80% or your download allowance for the month. Is the equipment covered under warranty? Yes, the equipment is covered under warranty for a 12 month period, and the warranty even covers storm damage. What type of connection does my computer need? Your computer needs a network adaptor, also known as an Ethernet network port or NIC (network interface card)
